What is an STD/STI?

STIs or Sexually Transmissible Infections are caused by having unprotected sex with a partner who has an STI. There are many different STIs including chlamydia, herpes, gonorrhea, syphilis, genital herpes, scabies, pubic lice (crabs), hepatitis and HIV (the virus that causes AIDS). These infections have many different symptoms including genital discharge, rashes, pain, or irritation. It is important to see a physician if you have had any type of unprotected sex with a partner who may have been exposed to an STI. Using condoms can prevent the spread of STIs but are not a guarantee that the infection will not spread. Please note this information was provided by http://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au.
